Mogadishu, Monday, March 29, 2021: The Federation of the Somali Journalists (FESOJ) has held a launching meeting for the distribution of a printed Booklet on the rights of the working Somali journalists to all the journalists operational across the regions of Somalia.

The launching event for the Booklet has been held at the FESOJ office in Mogadishu on Sunday, March 28, 2021, with the attendance of fifteen journalists from ten media houses based in Mogadishu.

Each of the fifteen participating journalists has been provided with a copy of the booklet as most of them have previously attended the labor rights advocacy campaigns at the radio stations and training for the trusted persons from the media outlets.

The booklet entitled “Journalist Know Your Rights” -has been developed and printed by the Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) in partnership with the Finnish Foundation for media and development (VIKES), EU Mission in Somalia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland.

The main aim of the Booklet is to improve the awareness and understanding capacity of the Somali journalists working for the media outlets regarding labor rights and know the significance of labor union.

“The booklet serves as a handbook and summarizes the recommendations you have made during the labor advocacy campaigns and training for the trusted persons, such as awarding contracts to the working journalists to protect their employment rights.” Farah Omar Nur, FESOJ Secretary-General said speaking at the launching event.

“Furthermore, we intend to distribute copies of the booklets at each of the key regions for the journalists working for the media outlets in the regional states.” Farah Omar added.
Muhudin Husni, Deputy Chairman of FESOJ speaking at the launching event pointed out most of the journalists, especially those in the regions are low skilled and need to improve their skills to find employment based on contracts and the protection of their labor rights.

“Let everyone think of studying the information in the booklet and share with our colleagues, eventually we will be able to sit with the media management to make them accountable.” Fardowsa Mohamed Sahal from Radio Kulmiye suggested during the launching meeting.

Saciya Nur Iid from Radio Himilo said anyone who reads the booklet will understand the situation of journalists and how they could get their labor rights, for example, male and female journalists are not equally paid, so there is a need for media owners to consider equal payment for the journalists on qualification bases regardless of gender.

The booklet on Journalist Know Your Rights – is mainly focusing on the key contents: facts about the state of the media in Somalia, what is a trade union, collective bargaining, what is a trusted person, the major challenges facing the Somali media staff and how to solve problems at the workplace.
