80 Youth and Journalists have completed training Supported UNSOM

Mogadishu, Monday, May 8, 2023: The Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) concluded 3-day journalists’ training workshops on reporting youth.

The event, part of the second phase of such training workshop programs, has been held simultaneously in Mogadishu city and Galkayo city of Puntland State.

A total of eighty participants, including journalists and youth, attended the two training workshops mainly aimed at training journalists in the art of reporting on youth issues.

Experienced trainers have been engaged to facilitate the training workshops at the systematically targeted areas of Mogadishu and Galkacyo city of Puntland.

Organized by the Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) and supported by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), the training was intended to increase awareness of young people’s rights and enhance media coverage featuring youth from different backgrounds: Their perspectives, priorities, and activities.

“The training workshop was aimed to provide a platform discussing how to improve the close cooperation between the youth and the media reporters in jointly promoting media coverage of programs and stories with youth.” Farah Omar Nur, Secretary General of FESOJ, said.

The key topics covered during the three-day training workshop included News worth elements, Interview skills and Vox pop, Ethical reporting and protecting sources, Conflict sensitive reporting, Youth peace, youth rights and Challenges, Reporting Youth issues, Introducing to International and African union convention on youth and Media Law.

During the proceedings of the training workshop, the participating reporters and youth exchanged constructive ideas and discussions relating to the key lessons they have learned.

The participants, both the youth and reporters, appreciated UNSOM for supporting the training program, which has given them an opportunity to fully discuss the impact of addressing youth issues jointly and have requested such gatherings be maintained.

In conclusion, Mohamed Mohamud Adde, a veteran senior journalist working with the BBC for a long time, urged the participants in the Mogadishu training to support the Somali community with the valuable lessons they have learned from the workshop during the past three days.

Furthermore, Farah Omar Nur, Secretary General of FESOJ, has thanked the journalists and the youth of Mogadju and Galkayo for their active participation during the training sessions. He pledged to be working with the Somali journalists, wherever they are in the regions of Somalia, to improve their further professional and capacity skills.

In partnership with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), the Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) plans to continue conducting the third phase of similar training programs at the other major regional cities of Somalia.
