Twenty young journalists completed training advancing their professional skills in Beledweynte city, Hirshabelle State
Mogadishu, Wednesday, September 29, 2025: The Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) has concluded training with young newly employed journalists across Somalia on professional skills in Beledweyne city. Hirshabelle State.
The 2 -day training workshop conducted from 22nd to 23rd September 2025 at Eiyow Guest House in in Beledweyne city was held for 20 young journalists coming from various media outlets including radio stations and freelancers.
“We are pleased to return to Beledweyne city to support your professional growth. I encourage you to engage fully and ask questions, and I hope you will complete this training as knowledgeable journalists committed to ethical standards,” said Ahmed Ali Mohamed, FESOJ Training Secretary in his opening remarks.
On his part, Sheikh Abdiwajid Sheikh Nuuriyow, the Deputy Commissioner for Social Affairs of Hiran Region, underscored the value of the training and thanked FESOJ for organizing it. He urged the young journalists to take full advantage of the training program, stressing their influence and the importance of informing communities in the digital era.
He emphasized that society needs knowledge, skills, and responsibility, urging the trainees to become journalists who unite communities, share positive stories, serve the public, and contribute to development. “The knowledge gained from the training should be applied in your daily media work.” He added.
During the 2-day training proceedings, the participants were taken through the main themes focusing on: Journalism ethics, the media law, gender sensitive reporting, use of social media – roles and critiques, fake news and combating disinformation.
During the sessions proceeding, journalists had been provided with the opportunity to work in groups on the topics covered in the lessons, and test their understanding with technical discussions and examples reflecting the situation in their local area.
“I have learned from the training the role of media in conflict resolution and the importance of verifying information. I am grateful to FESOJ for this opportunity,” said Liibaan Suubane, one of the participants from Danan Media.
“Also, we learned how to write news in manner based on ethics and accountability. We thank FESOJ for the training opportunity.” Liibaan Suubane mentioned.
Similarly, Sahra Ibrahim from Radio Beer-lula indicated that the training significantly changed her understanding and the skills she will use in her work.
“I am grateful to the facilitators and FESOJ for the training. I benefited from new techniques on how to record interviews and how to manage public voices (Vox pop). I hope that FESOJ will return to us often to increase our knowledge.”Sahra Ibrahim, female journalist participant from Radio Beer-lula pointed out.
In his closing remarks, Ahmed Ali Mohamed, FESOJ Training Secretary expressed to be very pleased with successfully completing the 2 – day training for the newly young newly employed journalists with basic professional skills and what is believed to be significant for the media including how to cover gender sensitive issues.
He urged the journalists on the importance of implementing the lessons learned during the two days, in order to produce professionals who, demonstrate knowledge and responsibility.
In addition, FESOJ has conducted training with six trusted persons from three media houses held on Wednesday, September 24, 2025 in Beledweyne city, Hirshabelle State.
The main intention of the training program was to improve the trusted persons’ awareness and understanding of labour rights and the importance of trade union, and to train the newly elected trusted person in their tasks to address the labour rights issues at the workplaces as well.
The six trusted persons in attendance of the training were three male and three female journalists (one male and one female journalists) selected from each of the three media stations operational in Beledweyne city including Radio Hiranweyn , Danan Media and Radio Beer-lula.
The training workshop is part of program activities funded by the EU, supported by Free Press Unlimited (FPU) and implemented by FESOJ in cooperation with VIKES.
