FESOJ and SWJO Jointly Implemented Training Workshops Promoting Women’s Political Participation
Mogadishu, Thursday, June 24, 2021: In partnership with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), the Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) and the Somali Women Journalist Organization (SWJO) has organized and conducted three – day virtual training workshop in three phases as part of an initiative to support women’s political participation in Somalia.
The virtual training workshops aimed to increase the journalists’ skills in advocating and championing women’s political participation and to ensure them take more prominent leadership roles in decision-making platforms has been held for journalist selected from various locations in Mogadishu, Benadir region, and the five regional states of South West State, Jubbaland, Hirshabelle, Galmudug and Puntland.
Sixty journalists of both genders, 60 per cent female, were the key participants in the three-phased virtual training workshop promoting women’s political participation from April to June 2021.
The participating journalists were drawn from various media outlets, including the print and online media, radio, TV, and freelance journalists.
The first virtual training workshop conducted from 27th to 29th April 2021 was held for twenty journalists targeted from Mogadishu, Banadir region, Baidoa city and Brava city of South West State.
The second virtual training undertaken from 17th to 19th May 2021 has been held for twenty journalists working in the cities of Beletweyne city, Jowhar city of Hirshabelle State and Bosaso city, Qardo city, north Galkacyo city, Garowe city of Puntland state
The third online workshop implemented from 15th to 17th June 2021 has been provide to twenty journalists from Kismayo city, Doolow city and Dhoobley city of Jubbaland State, South Galkacyo, Adado city and Dhuusamabreeb city of Galmudug State ,
The main purpose of the similar virtual training workshops conducted ahead of the Somali elections was to build the capacity of the journalists on how to report about women’s political participation and to advocate and campaign for women’s political participation.
During the three-phased virtual training workshop, the journalists were taken through significant topics that include Cultural Stigma, Activism and Collective action, Political Finance, Strengthening structural and institutional reforms, Women’s political organizations and female politicians achieve a common goal, Promoting grassroots awareness-raising for women on their political and social rights, Women Leadership Skills and Pillars of Good Governance
In conclusion, Abadir Abdulkadir Elmi, the Chairman of FESOJ highlighted that skilled and informed journalists is crucial for enhancing and strengthening the role of women’s participation in politics and the decision-making process.
He appreciated UNSOM for supporting the type of training programs for the journalists on women’s political participation.
Farhia Mohamed Kheyre, Chairlady of SWJO, stated in her closing remarks that the journalists are responsible for boosting women’s participation in politics, thereby necessitating the need to build their skills on fostering equality.
