FESOJ Calls for Protection of Press Freedom and Journalist Safety Amid Rising Harassment in Mogadishu
Mogadishu, August 08, 2025: The Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) expresses serious concern over the recent increase in arrests, physical assaults, intimidation, and other forms of harassment targeting journalists in Mogadishu. In recent weeks, journalists have been actively reporting on land disputes affecting residential areas and markets, involving both local communities and government officials.
Regrettably, instead of safeguarding journalists’ rights, security forces have frequently subjected them to unlawful detention, physical abuse, and the confiscation or destruction of their professional equipment. These actions clearly violate the Provisional Constitution of Somalia, the Somali Media Law, and international human rights standards.
FESOJ unequivocally condemns these violations. We emphasize that any allegations against journalists must be addressed through due legal process, including judicial oversight and fair trial. Arbitrary arrests, mistreatment, or unauthorized seizures are unacceptable and undermine the rule of law.
Such practices threaten not only the safety and dignity of journalists but also the fundamental freedoms of expression and access to information. These freedoms are essential for Somalia’s democratic development as well as long-term stability.
To support journalists facing these challenges, FESOJ is a member of a legal alliance led by Hiil Law Firm, which provides professional legal assistance to media workers seeking justice and accountability.
We respectfully urge security agencies and government officials to recognize journalists as key partners in promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance. Journalists must be allowed to perform their vital role without fear of harassment or repression, in full accordance with national laws and international obligations.
At the same time, FESOJ reminds all journalists of their responsibility to uphold the highest ethical standards by reporting accurately, fairly, and impartially, especially when covering sensitive and potentially divisive issues.
FESOJ remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting and empowering Somali journalists. We recognize that a free, independent, and ethical press is fundamental to ensuring the public’s right to accurate and reliable information. Upholding these principles is essential for fostering informed public discourse and advancing the nation’s democratic development and social progress.
