FESOJ Concluded 3-day training for journalists in Kismayo City

Kismayo, Monday, September 13, 2021: A training workshop has been concluded today in Kismayo city of Jubbaland State for thirty journalists receiving capacity building in the valuable procedure for election reporting and achieving the 30% quota for women.

The training workshops intended to strengthen the capacity of journalists in election reporting and to support the 30% women quota during the elections in Somalia has been held for thirty journalists from 11th to 13th September 2021 at Hotel Mecca in Kismayo city, Jubbaland State.

Trainers from the Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) in partnership with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) has provided the most suitable lessons and techniques that could be conducted with election reporting, especially that supporting women’s quotas.

The training workshop in Kismayo city has covered the main themes including election reporting, especially women quota, media ethics, procedures to follow on how the audience gets access to information. Interviews, drama, debates and analysis.

Hamdi Mahad Yasin, one of the participating female journalists, indicated she has gained the knowledge she could use to report Somalia’s elections, especially she could play a role in supporting the different types of programs for women’s 30% quota.

“I can produce drama, feature program, package, debate and discussions regarding the election of women supporting their 30% quota,” She said.

AbdirahimDeeq Muse, attending the training said since the journalists are the ones capable of transferring the information they receive to the public, this 3 –day training was essential for us to learn how to report elections and support the 30% quota for women through using reporting, drama storytelling and debates in practicing the ethics and journalistic responsibility.

Sahur Yusuf Baynax from Women Committee ensuring the women quota has mentioned the background of women quota in past years. She said everyone has a role to make women achieve the quota for women.

She asked the media to transfer to the community the lessons and the drama they had performed for us during the sessions, and show the educated Somali women could achieve their 30% quota in the parliament.

Abdishukri Arab Omar, the Director-General of Jubbaland Ministry of Information, appreciated FESOJ for building the capacity of the Somali journalists , particularly those of Jubbaland. He mentioned the work quality of the journalists in the region has improved.

“This training comes at expected time when the journalists have gained knowledge on election reporting and the 30% women quota.” He said the Ministry of Information, the Minister and himself are committed to providing the journalists access to election information and participation.

“Since women’s quota protections is essential, we expect the journalists who have completed this training to make better reporting on the support given to the 30% women quota” The DG added

Suleiman Mohamud Mohamed, Jubbland Minister of Information, thanked FESOJ and UNSOM for their support in his closing remarks.

“I feel that you have learned a lot from this training, I urge you to put into practice the knowledge you have learned during the three days. The effort brought to us by FESOJ comes at time when there is campaigning for the 30% women quota.” The Minister said in conclusion.
