FESOJ concluded training on youth in social media engagement, video content production and digital safety in Mogadishu

Mogadishu, Saturday, February 22, 2025: With the support of BBC Media Action and EU funding, FESOJ successfully concluded a two-day training session on social media engagement, video content production, and digital safety in Mogadishu, Somalia.

The program, held from February 19-20, 2025, at Iftin Training Hall in Mogadishu, brought together 26 participants (13 male and 13 female)—primarily young journalists from five Somali regional states, including Hirshabelle, South West, Jubbaland, and Galmudug, as well as from Mogadishu city.

This capacity-building initiative aimed to empower youth with the skills necessary for effective social media engagement, video content creation, and digital safety. Senior trainers from FESOJ led the sessions, covering key topics such as the need for social media engagement training, ethical issues in social media use, video production fundamentals, challenges in digital security, and strategies for effective social media management.

In his opening remarks, Ahmed Mohamed Ali (Sharif), Senior Media Trainer and Head of the Training Department at FESOJ, outlined the training’s main themes, emphasizing the critical importance of digital safety.

“The purpose of the training is to strengthen the capacity of youth in social media engagement, video content production, and digital security,” stated Farah Omar Nur, Secretary General of FESOJ, during the program launch.

On the first day, participants were introduced to the fundamentals of social media ethics, explored various social media platforms, and discussed the advantages and disadvantages of their use. The second day delved deeper into social media research and video content production techniques.

“I’ve learned how to protect social media data and how to produce video content effectively. I’m eager to apply the skills I’ve gained from this training,” said Farhia Hassan Mohamed, a female journalist from the Faculty of Journalism at Somali National University.

Ali Mohamed Ali, a freelance cameraman, expressed his appreciation for the insights gained into social media ethics and digital security, noting his intention to further develop his multimedia professional skills.

“With the increasing use of social media, it is crucial for young journalists to be equipped with the skills to navigate these platforms effectively and professionally, while also prioritizing digital security,” emphasized Farah Omar Nur, Secretary General of FESOJ, in his closing remarks.

This training is part of a series of capacity-building activities funded by the EU, supported by BBC Media Action, and implemented by FESOJ.
