FESOJ concludes a series of training sessions on newly hired journalists and trade union rights in Kismayo, Jubbaland State
Mogadishu, Saturday, July 27, 2023: The Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) has completed a 2-day training with newly employed young journalists on professional skills in Kismayo city, Jubbaland regional state.
“We plan to provide training opportunities to newly employed journalists across all regional states that have not had a chance to enhance their professional skills,” said Farah Omar Nur, Secretary General of FESOJ in his opening remarks.
Suleiman Mohamed Mohamud, Minister of Information of Jubbaland State, expressed appreciation for the lessons the newly employed and previous journalists received to further improve their professional skills in his official opening speech.
Furthermore, he urged the journalist trainees to seek university education and thanked Abdulkadir Mohamed Dhicisow, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Science at the Somali National University, who spoke with the journalists on the significance of reaching a university level of knowledge.
Aweis Mohamed Hussein, Minister of Youth and Sports of Jubbaland State, and Foos Ali Abdirahman, MP and member of the media committee of Jubbaland Parliament, jointly commended the journalists participating in the training and advised them to practically apply what they are learning.
During the 2-day training sessions, the participants were taken through the main topics of journalism ethics, media law, gender-sensitive reporting, the use of social media – roles and critiques, and combating disinformation.
In his closing remarks, Farah Omar Nur, Secretary General of FESOJ, appreciated the Ministry of Information of Jubbaland and the Jubbaland Journalists Association for their major role in contributing to the smooth implementation of the training workshop. He urged the young journalists to put into practical use what they have learned.
The young journalists participating in the training exercise highlighted the need for journalism skills and indicated that they have benefited from the 2-day sessions. The participants thanked FESOJ for this type of capacity building program.
On the other hand, FESOJ implemented training with six trusted individuals from three media houses held on Thursday, July 28, 2023, in Kismayo city, Jubbaland State.
The key purpose of the training program was to improve the trusted individuals’ awareness and understanding of labor rights and the significance of trade unions, and to train the newly elected trusted individuals in their tasks to address labor rights issues at the workplace.
The six trusted individuals in attendance at the training were three male and three female journalists (one male and one female journalist) selected from each of the three media stations in Kismayo city, including Jubbaland TV, Radio Kismayol and Radio Waamo.
The training workshop for the young journalists and trusted persons is part of a series of capacity building program activities funded by the EU, supported by Free Press Unlimited (FPU) and implemented by FESOJ in cooperation with VIKES.
