FESOJ condemns recent violence against the journalists in Mogadishu city by the Somali police
Mogadishu, Thursday, August 15, 2024: The Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) condemns the series of attacks the Banadir police forces have committed against journalists who were engaged in their daily media work in the last two days.
On Tuesday,13 August 2024, female journalist Hibo Mohamed Mohamud working the Bulsho Television Network based in Mogadishu sustained injury while covering demonstration staged by the Bajaj motorcycle drivers in Mogadishu city.
The journalist Hibo Mohamed’ injury was caused when a police car carrying armed forces tried to forcefully push the protestors.
Furthermore, on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, the protest of the motorcycle drivers restarted again and the security forces once again assaulted journalists from Danan TV and Osob TV who were reporting on the protest, their equipment was seized and as yet nothing has been returned back.
Farah Omar Nur, Secretary General of the Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) has called on the government to immediately stop the continued abuse of the journalists by the police.
Threats and obstruction of Somali journalists’ work have intensified in recent days and this indicates that government ignores the protection of freedom of the press.
