FESOJ has completed training advancing the professional skills of young journalists in Baidoa, South West State
Mogadishu, Tuesday, August 8, 2023: The Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) has concluded a 2 – day training workshop with young newly hired journalists on professional skills in Baidoa City, South West State.
“This training which is the third of its type is intended to improve the professional capacity of the young journalists, especially in the ethics of journalism, which is required to be practically adopted. Similar capacity-building programs have been held earlier in Mogadishu and Kismayo.” Farah Omar Nur, FESOJ Secretary General, explained in his introductory remarks.
In his official opening speech, Abdifatah Ali Yusuf, Minister of Information of South West State, thanked FESOJ for giving the newly employed young journalists a valuable opportunity to improve their professional skills further.
Twenty journalists, forty per cent female, primarily young and newly hired, drawn from the various media outlets in Baidoa city, were the key participants of the two–day training workshop held from 6th to 7th August 2023.
During the 2-day training proceedings, the participants were exposed to the main topics: Journalism ethics, media law, gender-sensitive reporting, use of social media – roles and critiques and combating disinformation.
Muhudin Husni, Deputy Chairman of FESOJ, officially closing the training workshop, thanked the trainees for their active participation. He hopes the training will eventually increase their knowledge of media regulation, media ethics, gender-sensitive reporting and prevention of violence against vulnerable people.
Furthermore, he advised the young journalists to put what they have learned into practical use.
The young journalists participating in the training program have indicated they required journalism skills and have highlighted to have benefited from the 2- day sessions. The participants have appreciated FESOJ for this type of capacity-building program.
In addition, FESOJ has conducted a one-day training with six trusted persons from three media houses held on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, in Baidoa city, South West State.
The main aim of the training program was to improve the trusted persons’ awareness and understanding of labour rights and the importance of trade unions and to train the newly elected trusted person in their tasks to address the labour rights issues at the workplace as well.
The six trusted persons in attendance at the training were three male and three female journalists (one male and one female journalist) selected from each of the targeted three media stations operational in Baidoa city, including Radio Warsan, Radio Arlaadi and Radio/TV Voice of Bay and Bakol media.
The training workshop for young journalists and trusted persons is part of a series of capacity-building program activities funded by the EU, supported by Free Press Unlimited (FPU) and implemented by FESOJ in cooperation with VIKES.
