FESOJ has completed training improving the professional skills of young journalists in Kismayo city, Jubbaland State
Mogadishu, Friday, September 27, 2024: The Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) has concluded a 2 – day training workshop with young newly employed journalists on professional skills in Kismayo city, Jubbaland State.
Speaking at the opening of the training session were khadar Iman Dhaqane, Chairman of the Jubbaland Journalists Association, Sade Abdi Tahlil , Radio Kismayo and Abdullahi Abdirahman Barre , Jubbaland TV has pointed out the importance is to promote the professional
capacity of the young journalists especially in the ethics of journalism which is required to be practically adopted.
Twenty journalists, including female journalists, mainly young newly employed that have been selected from different media outlets in Kismayo city were the main participants of the two – day training workshop that was held at Hotel Maamuus from 25th to 26th September 2024.
During the 2-day training proceedings, the participants were presented with the main topics dealing with Journalism ethics, gender sensitive reporting, conflict sensitive reporting, how to make the various types of interviews, news and the value of the listeners, use of social media, – roles and critiques and combating disinformation.
Furthermore, during the sessions, both the facilitators and the trainees has jointly conducted discussions on new stories previously prepared and presented by the reporter and checked whether the standards for news preparation were followed or not.
The young journalists participating the training program have indicated the training has provided them lessons on the ways to follow when making news and reports, and in general working on the bases of ethics of journalism.
The participants have highlighted to have benefited from the 2- day sessions, and appreciated FESOJ for this type of capacity building program.
“Similar training has been conducted in Mogadishu and in the regional states for the benefit to all the new young journalists joining with the media sector, and I would like to reiterate FESOJ will further maintain the capacity building programs.” Farah said in his official closing remarks.
In addition, FESOJ has concluded today one – day training program with six trusted persons from three media houses held today on Friday, September 27, 2024 in Kismayo city, Jubbaland State.
The key purpose of the training program was to improve the trusted persons’ journalist’s awareness and understanding of labour rights and the importance of trade union, and to train the newly elected trusted person in their tasks to address the labour rights issues at the workplaces as well.
The six trusted persons in attendance of the training were three male and three female journalists, one male and one female journalists selected from each of the three media stations in Kismayo city including Jubbaland TV, Radio Sooyaal and Radio Waamo.
During the sessions, Farah Omar Nur, Secretary General of FESOJ discussed with the trainees the importance and the opportunties that can be benefited from using written employment contracts between the journalists and the media managers
In conclusion , Ahmed Ali Mohamed , Head of FESOJ Training Department facilitated sesson for the trusted persons journalists indicating how to implement effective cooperation betwen the working journalists and their media managers.
The training workshop for the young journalists and trusted persons is part of a series of capacity building program activities funded by the EU, supported by Free Press Unlimited (FPU) and implemented by FESOJ in cooperation with VIKES.
