FESOJ has concluded workshop training for persons with disability and journalists in Jowhar city, Hirshabelle State
Jowhar city, Tuesday, March 21, 2023: Three – day training workshop debating and discussing on reporting news and issues regarding persons with disabilities has been concluded in Jowhar city, Hirshabelle State.
In partnership with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), the Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) has completed the training, the 6th of its type, that was convened at Hotel Safa, Jowhar city, Hirsbabelle State.
Forty persons, including journalists and persons with disabilities, have jointly attended the training program for integration and exchanging information that could make the reporters understand
the situation of the Somali disabled, especially their challenges and opportunities in the Jowhar district and surrounding areas.
Furthermore, CSO organizations supporting persons with disabilities operational in Jowhar city, Hirshabelle State, were the key participants in the training program.
The main aim of the workshop training was to enhance journalists’ knowledge of people with disabilities, improve media coverage of persons with disabilities, intensify their visibility and
acceptance for equal opportunities within Somali society.
In his opening remarks, Abdishakur Shaasha, the Deputy Minister of Information of Hirshabelle State, indicated the FESOJ’s role in promoting the media in the country, especially in Hirshabelle State and appreciated UNSOM for the support.
Safia Abdulkadir and two other persons with hearing impairment in writing have indicated this training has provided them with the opportunity to familiarize themselves with other disabled persons and journalists and will eventually take advantage of their association.
During the three-day journalists’ training on reporting persons with disabilities, the participants were taken through the main topics, including the Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and its key principles and objectives.
Moreover, the participants discussed how to strengthen close cooperation between disabled persons and media reporters in jointly promoting the role of the media in covering programs and stories with disability.
Farah Omar Nur, Secretary General of FESOJ, has advised the participants not to lose their good understanding during the training proceeding and to make their relationship remain continuous.
“The Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) has provided the disable persons and journalists in Jowhar an opportunity to integrate and learn about courses on the intranational conventions about the disability and the journalists’ professional skills.” Abdishakur Shaasha, Deputy Minister of Information of Hirshabelle State, pointed out in his closing remarks.
