FESOJ has finalized training enhancing the professional skills of young journalists in Baidoa city, South West State

Mogadishu, Friday, July 26, 2024: The Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) has completed a 2 – day training workshop with young newly employed journalists on professional skills in Baidoa city, South West State.

“This training which is intended to improve the professional capacity of the young journalists especially in the ethics of journalism which is required to be practically adopted.” Farah Omar Nur, FESOJ Secretary General explained in his opening remarks.

Twenty journalists, forty percent female, mostly young newly hired that have been selected from different media outlets in Baidoa city were the key participants of the two – day training workshop that was held at Hotel Haldoor  from 24th to 25th July 2024. The participating journalists were from Radio Warsan,Radio Baidoa , Radio voice of Bay and Bakol, Radio Arlaadi, Radio Wartelka Arlaadii and Radio/TV South West.

During the 2-day training proceedings, the participants were exposed to the main topics focusing on: Journalism ethics, gender sensitive reporting, conflict sensitive reporting, how to make the various types of interviews, news and the value of the listeners, use of social media, – roles and critiques and combating disinformation.

Furthermore, during the sessions, both the facilitators and the trainees has jointly conducted analysis on new stories previously prepared and presented by the reporter and checked whether the guidelines for news preparation were followed or not.

The young journalists participating the training program have indicated the training has educated them with the ways to follow when making news and reports, and in general working on the bases of ethics of journalism. The participants have highlighted to have benefited from the 2- day sessions, and appreciated FESOJ for this type of capacity building program.

Farah Omar Nur, Secretary General of FESOJ officially closing the training workshop thanked the trainees for their active participation. He described the twenty young journalists completing the training to have showed enthusiasm and desire to improve their knowledge on professional journalism.

In addition, FESOJ has concluded one – day training program with six trusted persons from three media houses held today on Friday, July 26, 2024 in Baidoa city, South West State.

The key purpose of the training program was to improve the trusted persons’ journalist’s awareness and understanding of labour rights and the importance of trade union, and to train the newly elected trusted person in their tasks to address the labour rights issues at the workplaces as well.

The six trusted persons participating the training were three male and three female journalists (one male and one female journalists) selected from each of the targeted three media stations operational in Baidoa city including Radio Warsan, Radio Arlaadi and Radio/TV Voice of Bay and Bakol media.

During the sessions, Farah Omar Nur, Secretary General of FESOJ discussed with the trainees the significacne and the opportunties that can be benefited from using written employment contracts between the journalists and the media managers.

In conclusion , Ahmed Ali Mohamed , Head of FESOJ Training Department facilitated sesson for the trusted persons journalists indicating how to implement effective cooperation betwen the working journalists and their media managers.

The training workshop for the young journalists and trusted persons is part of a series of capacity building program activities funded by the EU, supported by Free Press Unlimited (FPU) and implemented by FESOJ in cooperation with VIKES.
