FESOJ held training for trusted persons from the local media outlets in Mogadishu.

Mogadishu, Tuesday, July 4, 2023: The Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) held a one-day training workshop on labour rights and trade union rights with twenty trusted persons from ten media houses operational in Mogadishu.

The main aim of the training program was to strengthen the trusted persons’ awareness and understanding of labour rights and the significance of trade unions and to train the newly elected trusted person in their tasks to address the labour rights issues at the workplace as well.

The twenty trusted people who participated in the training were selected from ten radio centres whose directors had met FESOJ the day before.

“The training workshop was needed to promote the awareness of the trusted person’s journalists to understand trade union and improve their capacity to defend their employment rights at the workplaces.” Farah Omar Nur, Secretary General of the Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ), said in his opening remarks.

“It’s the trusted persons that are workers representatives at the workplaces are expected to address disagreements over the employment rights disputes.” He further explained.

Farah Omar Nur, Secretary General of the Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ), briefly mentioned that FESOJ has printed and distributed a booklet entitled “Journalists Know Your Rights.”

“The booklet serves as a handbook and summarizes the recommendations made during the labour advocacy campaigns and training for the trusted persons, such as awarding contracts to the working journalists to protect their employment rights.” Farah Omar Nur, FESOJ Secretary-General, detailed.

Mohamed Mohamud Adde, a senior media trainer, spoke about the significance of the training for the trusted persons and told them that justice and responsibility start from you and the motive for the training is upgrade your professional capacity to make the public better informed and at the same time know your rights as media workers.

In a presentation, Ahmed Ali Mohamed Sharif, senior media trainer, detailed the employment procedure based on labour rights and how the employer and the employee could work and cooperate jointly.

In addition, he further explained nine elements relating with the human resources policy including equal opportunities and diversity, terms and conditions, selection and recruitment, performance management, grievance procedures, staff development, disciplinary procedures, health and safety and prevention of bulling and harassment.

Furthermore, during the discussions, the trusted persons have suggested the media managers should be also provided with similar training to raise their awareness and understanding the labour rights issues.
