FESOJ held training for twenty young newly employed journalists in Galkacyo city, Galmudug State
Mogadishu, Friday, August 09, 2024: The Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) has opened up and completed two- day training program for twenty young newly employed journalists that have recently joined in the profession of journalism in Galkacyo city, Galmudug State, which have been in progress from 7th to 8th August 2024.
The journalists that have completed the two-day training program were chosen from Radio Deegaan, Radio Hayaan operational in Galkacyo city and other news reporters’ representatives from other radio and TV stations in Galkacyo city and elsewhere.
The journalists, both male and female, were trained in the topics of journalistic ethics, gender and conflict sensitive issues reporting, how to conduct interviews and the value of the listeners, use of social media, – roles and critiques and combating disinformation. During the first day, following the sessions, the topics were analyzed in separate discussions and the reporters presented how to make news story and from which angle it could be made.
“This training which is aimed to promote the professional capacity of the young journalists especially in the ethics of journalism is required to be practically applied.” Farah Omar Nur, FESOJ Secretary General detailed in his opening speech.
He added similar training programs are being planned to be held at other regional cities of Somalia as well.
In addition, both Eng. Mohamed Abdi Elmi, the Deputy Mayor of Galkacyo city and Dr. Bedel Liban Mohamud, Deputy Chairman of Mudug region have attended in the opening session appreciated FESOJ for the opportunity and pointed out the significance of the training program for the journalists which they said will eventually increase their knowledge and improve their professional media work.
On his part, Hassan Abdirahman Adan, Director of training of the Ministry of Information, Galmudug State has indicated expectation that the new young journalists will gain a lot from the capacity building program and mentioned the new journalists have special responsibility, and urged them not to take it lightly. He thanked FESOJ and Mudug regional authorities for their major role.
Moreover, experienced media trainers from FESOJ has facilitated the training program which have covered lessons related with the basic professional journalism, and the young newly employed journalists has expressed high desire of participation in the group work sessions, analysis and raising questions for discussions.
In conclusion, Farah Omar Nur, Secretary General of FESOJ has appreciated the journalists for their time and active participation and for following the lessons that were presented during the two- day training program.
Sawda Shairf Osman, one of the female participants has indicated the training she received was very meaningful and the topics presented was what they have needed most.
Mohmed Abdullahi Salad and Farhan Ahmed Salad has described the training has contributed added value to their professional journalism, and have promised to practically apply to their media works.
The training workshop for the young journalists is part of a series of capacity building program activities funded by the EU, supported by Free Press Unlimited (FPU) and implemented by FESOJ in cooperation with VIKES.
