FESOJ is concerned about Freedom of Expression and Press freedom in Hirshabelle, Galmudug and Somaliland

The Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) is deeply concerned about recent events targeting press freedom and freedom of expression in Somalia, particularly in Hirshabelle, Galmudug, and Somaliland.

Journalist Abdifatah Yusuf Beereed was detained by the police of Dhuusamareeb city, the regional capital of Galmudug State, for allegedly filming a video in which an army member voiced grievances about salary issues. Beereed remains in police custody, and FESOJ and the Galmudug Journalists Association (GALJA) are working to secure his release and protect his freedom.

Abdirisaq Mire Dhore, a journalist affiliated with a charity organization, was abducted by a militant group in Beledweyne City, Hiran region, Hirshabelle State, on August 12, 2023. Unfortunately, there is no information available concerning the journalist’s current status, causing great concern and disappointment.

In Somaliland, Bushaaro Ali Mohamed (also known as Busharo Banday), a female journalist and activist, was detained in Hargeisa City on May 15, 2023. After spending three months in detention, she was sentenced to one year in prison by a court in Hargeisa. However, Bushaaro managed to buy out her prison term and regain her freedom.

These incidents, along with others that have occurred this year, have seriously undermined freedom of expression and press freedom in Somalia. In light of this, FESOJ urges the authorities of the country to safeguard press freedom and the right to freedom of expression, as enshrined in the constitution. Journalists and social activists should be able to carry out their work without fear of harm.
