FESOJ Strengthens the Capacity of Emerging Journalists Through Training in Adaado City, Galmudug State
Mogadishu, Wednesday, August 20, 2025: The Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) has successfully concluded a 2 – day training workshop with young newly employed journalists on improving their professional skills in Adaado city, Galmudug State.
The 2- day training workshop convened at Hotel Awaale from 18th to 19th August 2025 has brought together twenty journalists (15 male and 5 female) representing various media outlets in Adaado city, Galmudug State.
Ahmed Ali Mohamed, FESOJ Training Secretary, emphasized the importance of the program, stating: “We have selected twenty journalists as the most suitable people to participate in this training. It will add greatly to your knowledge of the journalism profession. Therefore, We especially encourage you to take full advantage of it.”
For his part, the Deputy Adaado District Commissioner, Abdihakiin Mohamed Ali “Shilin,” highlighted the training’s value for both the journalists and the community:
“I urge you to make the most of this valuable training for your skills and for the benefit of the environment in general. I hope you will strive for accuracy and reliability in your reporting of the regional events. I appreciate FESOJ for giving us this opportunity.”, Abdihakiin Mohamed Ali “Shilin,”, Deputy Adaado District Commissioner pointed out in his opening remarks.
During the 2-day training proceedings, the young media journalists in Adaado city who has not attended similar training in the last few years has been given the chance to be trained on the key topics, significant for the media focusing on: Journalism ethics, gender sensitive reporting, conflict sensitive reporting, how to make the various types of interviews, news and the value of the listeners, use of social media, – roles and critiques and combating disinformation.
Furthermore, the participants engaged in group work on the topics covered, which significantly enhanced their understanding and practical application of the lessons. The sessions also included interactive discussions, where journalists shared examples from their daily professional experiences, making the training more relevant and closely aligned with their work.
“We learned the basics of journalism, such as conducting interviews and preparing news. We also gained insights into how to conduct real research. I am very grateful to FESOJ for providing this opportunity, and I hope to apply the knowledge I have gained here in my future work” Abdirahman Rooble, a participant from Radio Voice of Central Region reflected on the value of the training stated.
Similarly, Hamdi Said, one of the young female journalists who benefited from the training, said: “I am very grateful to the FESOJ facilitators who trained us. We particularly benefited from how to verify information and reliable sources. Now I am confident that I can truly work as a good journalist who contributes to society.”
In his closing remarks, Ahmed Ali Mohamed, the training secretary of FESOJ, urged journalists not to limit themselves to training knowledge, but to constantly strengthen their skills:
“I urge you to further develop your knowledge of journalism. The lessons you have learned here must be applied responsibly, so that you can serve the community efficiently and confidently.” He pointed out.
FESOJ is confident that this successful training will play a significant role in empowering the new generation of Somali journalists, who will play a prominent role in the development of journalism in the country in the near future.
The training workshop, the second of its type in this year, is part of program activities funded by the EU, supported by Free Press Unlimited (FPU) and implemented by FESOJ in cooperation with VIKES.
