FESOJ Strongly Condemns the torture and detention of Somali journalists in Mogadishu
Mogadishu, Wednesday, February 16, 2022: The Haramad armies of the Somali Police forces today, Wednesday, February 16, 2022, has tortured and detained four journalists operating in Mogadishu who went to Kahda district police Station for reporting last night’s attack on the station.
The four journalists who were violated by the Haramad forces were from the Somali Cable TV and Five Somali TV and were: Ismail Mohamed Muse (Somali Cable TV), Mohamed Hassan (Somali Cable TV), Aweys Mohamud jiliow(Five Somali TV) and Mohamed Barri (Five Somali TV).
The journalists were blindfolded with their own taken off shirts, tied their legs behind their backs and laid on the hot sand.
The forces seem to have taken the steps they want at this transition period. The journalists have become a direct target of the powerful Haramad armies, who have cruelly punished these journalists who went to the Kahda police station scene of last night’s attack for reporting.
This mistreatment means that a journalist could not seek and access to information, and is not free to speak out or take photographs.
“It’s part of the September 17, 2020 election agreement the journalists to have access to report on the elections, however, but now it seems the journalists are facing risk in seeking information for the public interest.” Abadir Abdulkadir Elmi , FESOJ Chairman pointed out.
“We have experienced slapping and threatening with overhead firing bullets at the time of the detention before we have been released.” Aweys Mohamud Jilaow , Director of the Five Somali TV station explained speaking with the media after their release.
We condemn this arbitrary attack in the strongest terms and the authorities are expected to respond to this terrible act.
“It is not at this time of transition, ongoing elections and differences between the government prevailing; the journalists to be victims of the forces that were supposed to protect the safety and profession of the journalists.” Farah Omar Nur, FESOJ Secretary-General said.
End.
