FESOJ Trained Journalists and CSO Members on Improving Reporting environmental issues, climate change, natural disasters and their social impacts

Dhuusamareeb city, October 24, 2024:  A two- day training on improving reporting environmental issues, climate change, natural disasters and their social impacts has been concluded in Dhuusamareeb city, Galmudug State.

The 2- day training workshop convened at Beder Hotel from 23rd to 24th October 2024 was participated by twenty persons consisting of journalists and members from the CSOs working on environmental issues in Galmudug State especially in Dhuusamareeb city.

“The Galmudug journalists are playing pivotal role in the efforts raising community awareness to prevent issues that are causing environmental problems.” Ali Mohamud Farah, (Ali Seeko), Minister of Information of Galmudug State pointed out in his opening remarks appreciating FESOJ for conducting the training program.

On his part, Ahmed Ali Mohamed, Secretary of Training of FESOJ in his opening speech mentioned FESOJ has previously conducted three similar training workshops related with how to report news focusing on environment and climate change, and plans to further maintain such training programs.

Moreover, Mohamed Osman Beeray , Secretary General of Galmudug Journalist Association (GALJA) speaking at the occasion reiterated the need of the journalists , especially those from Galmudug State for the capacity building aiming on reporting issues on environment and climate change.

The journalists and members from the environmental CSOs were capacitated with comprehending the special intention for building better understanding and cooperation for sharing information and producing media content about climate change, natural disasters and mitigation measures and advocating on environmental issues.

The training will also ultimately support building better working relationships between Somali media workers and environmental CSOs and stakeholders.

During the 2 – day training sessions, the participants were taken through the topics on: – Training Environmental Reporting, what is environment, what is climate change, causes of climate change, Climate Change Impacts, Discussion on: Solutions for climate change, Discussion on: What do you know about current media role in environmental reporting and Discussion on ethical reporting and Environmental issues.

Furthermore, the participants were given time to group work on the following key themes: Causes of climate change, Current Effects of Climate Change, how can the media and environmental organizations work together on climate change, how can the press and environmental organizations educate the public and make the government aware of climate change?

The other topics focused in the group discussions included: Which are the biggest and most dangerous diseases caused by the climate change in Somalia and how can they be reduced? And the problems caused by climate change that have the most impact on Somalis and how to prevent them?

In addition, speaking at the conclusion of the training workshop, Allaale Farah Yaame, a Journalist and Diib Mohamud Cardoofe, female member of CSO standing for environmental issues both have expressed they have learnt a lot of information related with environment and climate. They have indicted to be intending to base their work with the valuable knowledge they have gained.

The training workshop for advancing reporting environmental issues, climate change, natural disasters and their social impacts, which was the third similar training of its type conducted by FESOJ, is part of a series of capacity building program activities funded by the EU, supported by Free Press Unlimited (FPU) and implemented by FESOJ in cooperation with VIKES.
