FESOJ trained twenty journalists and CSO members on improving reporting environmental issues, climate change, natural disasters and their social impacts in Garowe City

Garowe city, November 16, 2023: Twenty Somali journalists and members from environmental CSOs have jointly went through 2- day training on improving reporting environmental issues, climate change, natural disasters and their social impacts in Garowe city of Puntland State.

The 2- day training workshop convened at Dayah Hotel from 15th to 16th November 2023 was participated by twenty persons consisting of journalists and members from the CSOs working on environmental issues in Puntland State especially in Garowe city.

The journalists and members from the environmental CSOs were capacitated with comprehending the special intention for building better understanding and cooperation for sharing information and producing media content about climate change, natural disasters and mitigation measures and advocating on environmental issues.

The training will also eventually support building better working relationships between Somali media workers and environmental CSOs and stakeholders.

During the 2 – day training sessions, the participants were taken through the topics on: – Training Environmental Reporting, what is environment, what is climate change, causes of climate change, Climate Change Impacts, Discussion on: Solutions for climate change, Discussion on: What do you know about current media role in environmental reporting and Discussion on ethical reporting and Environmental issues.

Furthermore, the participants were given time to group work on the following key themes: Causes of climate change, Current Effects of Climate Change, how can the media and environmental organizations work together on climate change, how can the press and environmental organizations educate the public and make the government aware of climate change?

The other topics focused in the group discussions included: Which are the biggest and most dangerous diseases caused by the climate change in Somalia and how can they be reduced? And the problems caused by climate change that have the most impact on Somalis and how to prevent
them?

Hoda Mohamed Jama from Gole TV appreciated FESOJ saying the training has been held at the best and appropriate time for the journalists in Garowe city.

On their part, Saddiq Mahdi and Abdirahman Hassan Hayir , among the participants expressed appreciation for the opportunity and indicated to have benefited from the FESOJ conducted training on the environmental issues and the climate change.

“The journalists in Puntalnd State take their role in the efforts for community awareness raising, and in maintaining their work on how to accurately report on the environmental issues.” Farah Omar Nur, Secretary General of FESOJ stated speaking at the conclusion of the training.

In his closing remarks, Suleiman Said Nur, Director, Ministry of Information of Puntland pointed out the key topics covered in the training will be very useful for the journalists at this stage. He appreciated Free Press Unlimited, VIKES, FESOJ and EU that have funded the training program.

Ahmed Mohmed Ali (Sharif) Senior media trainer and Head of FESOJ Training Department and Omar Mohamed, an expert in environmental issues, and key facilitators of the training program has provided additional valuable explanation and in depth analysis on the main topics covered during the training sessions.

The training workshop for improving reporting environmental issues, climate change, natural disasters and their social impacts, which was the second similar training of its type conducted by FESOJ this year, is part of a series of capacity building program activities funded by the EU, supported by Free Press Unlimited (FPU) and implemented by FESOJ in cooperation with
VIKES.
