FESOJ Wrapped up Training on Journalism Ethics, Safety and Audio and Visual Content Production

Mogadishu, Monday, December 30, 2024: in partnership with BBC Media Action, the Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) has completed a three – day training workshop for FESOJ members on journalism ethics, audio and visual content production, safety of journalists including their digital safety in Mogadishu, Somalia.

Twenty -five persons (15 male and 10 female) participating the training were mainly reporters, cameramen, camerawoman video editors, technicians, producers, presenter and director working with various media outlets in Mogadishu, Balad city, Hirshabelle State and Afgoye city, South West State of Somalia.

The capacity building program on journalism ethics, audio and visual content production, safety of journalists including their digital safety have been in progress from the 28rd to 30th December 2024 at Iftin Training Hall in Mogadishu city, Somalia.

Senior trainers from FESOJ has been facilitating presentations focusing on the key topics including: Introduction to Audio/Visual Content Production and Tools, Audio/Visual Production Editing, safety protocol and Impact and Digital Media Proficiency – Content Strategy and Testing.

“The training is significant and opportunity to learn about journalism ethics, audio and visual content production, safety of journalists and digital safety as the media at times is referred as the fourth branch of government influencing social issues, political affairs for the public and the legislation.” Abadir Abdulkadir Elmi, Chairman of FESOJ stated in his opening remarks

In his welcoming speech, Ahmed Mohamed Ali (Sharif) senior media trainer and Head of the Training Department of FESOJ detailed the main themes that will be covered during the three-day training session with special focus on the digital security.

“The intention of the training is empowering the journalist with skills to produce high-quality audiovisual content, ethics of journalists and digital safety.” Farah Omar Nur, Secretary General of FESOJ has stated at the start of the training program.

During the first day sessions, presentation was made dealing with the general introduction of the digital media, and the difference between the traditional media and the digital media.

It was explained the digitized information could be transmitted as text, audio, video and graphics for viewing and listening to on the internet.

In addition, during the second- and third-day practical sessions, the key themes covered included audio production and editing with managing the microphone, noise reduction, audio level.

The participants were also taken through with video production skills and editing specially the techniques for lighting, framing and angles and recording techniques.

Furthermore, sessions covering the journalism ethics and code of conduct was explained, and the need to ensure the journalists have knowledge and experience in the principles of accurate, fair and responsible reporting.

A session was presented relating with safety of journalists including their digital safety with specific focus on what is digital media? The Importance of digital media, social media usage and digital security.

“We learned knowledge of ethical journalism, various audio and visual contents production skills for the TV and Facebook page with balance between the audio and the visual and how to protect the digital safety and security. I will share what I have learned with the colleages at the media station I came from” Mohamed Hassan Osman, editor from Radio Afgoye city, South West State pointed out.

Mulki Hassan Ibrahim, Camerawoman, RNN TV, Mogadishu appreciated FESOJ for conducting this type of training and indicated to have benefited from the three – day training program by learning how to combine audio, video and images, media safety and digital security.  She suggested to continue implementing similar training program in future.

Aweys Baazi Mohamed, Cameraman, Radio Braawe, Barava city, South West State speaking in Bravan dialect indicated the 3 -day training workshop has encouraged the journalists to acquire knowledge on ethical journalism and production of audio and visual content for transmission and digital security.

“In an era where cyber threats are increasingly common, journalists need to be equipped with the tools and knowledge to protect their personal data, secure communications, and safeguard their online presence.”  Farah Omar Nur, Secretary General of FESOJ pointed out in his closing remarks.

The training for FESOJ members on journalism ethics, audio and visual content production, safety of journalists including their digital safety is part of a series of capacity-building program activities funded by the EU, supported by BBC Media Action and implemented by FESOJ.
