Somalia’s Press Freedoms in Risk : Journalist Ali Mumin’s Arrest Raises Concerns!

Mogadishu, Wednesday, March 5, 2025 – The Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) welcomes the release of Ali Adan Mumin, a political blogger and social media commentator, who was freed on Tuesday after being detained.
Ali Adan Mumin was arrested on Saturday, March 1, 2025, and released on Tuesday, March 4, 2025. FESOJ expresses concern over his detention for two days without being presented in court, which placed his safety and well-being at risk.
FESOJ views the release of Ali Adan Mumin as a positive step towards respecting the rights of journalists and the principle of freedom of expression, which allows them to work freely without fear of retribution.
“A secure environment in which journalists can operate is essential to fostering a democratic society, where trust and transparency are fundamental values,” stated Abadir Abdulkadir Elm, Chairman of FESOJ.
Abadir Abdulkadir Elm further emphasized that journalists, as truth-tellers, often face significant risks, including detention, torture, harassment, and physical attacks. Defending their rights and ensuring their protection is vital for the continued functioning of a free press.
FESOJ also calls for increased support for the safety of journalists, urging the creation of secure working conditions that allow them to carry out their work without fear or harassment.
Human rights organizations have consistently raised concerns about the press freedom situation in Somalia, with the country ranked among the most dangerous places for journalists in Africa.
FESOJ remains committed to advocating for the safety and rights of journalists, emphasizing that the protection of freedom of speech and press freedom is critical to the health and stability of any democratic society.
