Twenty Journalists have completed UNSOM supported training program in Mogadishu

Mogadishu, Saturday, May 20, 2023: The Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) has completed one- day training on how to cover stories aimed for combating discrimination against minority groups held in Mogadishu, Somalia.

Twenty journalists coming from various sectors of the media including editors , reporters and presenters from media houses , TV stations and websites attended the training program, which was implemented in partnership with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia- Human Rights and Protection Group ((UNSOM-HRPG) on May 20, 2023 at Sahafi Hotel in Mogadishu city.

“The purpose of the training is for the journalists to learn how to report on stories related with minority groups and raise awareness on further improving the role of the media in unifying the Somali community.” In his opening remarks, Farah Omar Nur, Secretary General of FESOJ, said.

During the one -day training proceedings, the participants were exposed to the main themes including Ethics of Journalism, Debates/Discussions for radio program, Interview skills, Minority rights, what could be NEWS, Social inclusion, Stereotype and Stigma, Improving the role of the media covering programs and stories relating to marginalized and minority groups.

Furthermore, during the three-day training programs at both locations, the participants were given time to debate and discuss how to improve the role of the media covering programs and stories relating to the minority groups.

“As the media is social educator, I urge the participating journalists to be role model for themselves, the community and the next generation in the efforts towards combating discrimination against minority groups.” Mohamed Mohamud Adde, prominent journalist who have worked with the BB NEWS and Media Trainer Said in his closing remarks.

Ali Mohamed Mohamud, Reporter from Radio Arlaadi in Mogadishu indicated to have learned from the impactful training how to produce interviews and how to report stories about the minority groups, and that all people are equal and raised the need to further continue similar training for other journalists that have not had this training opportunity.

Hanan Mohmed Mohamud, female journalist working with the Radio Himilo in Mogadishu pointed out “We have discussed the major role of the media in reporting issues related with the minority groups and raise public awareness to decrease discrimination against minority groups.”

She has pledged to practically adopt what she has learned in her media content production covering stories of minority groups.
