Urgent Appeal to Continue VOA Somali Service Broadcasts

Dear Secretary Rubio,
The Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) is deeply concerned about the suspension of Voice of America (VOA) broadcasts, particularly the VOA Somali Service. For years, VOA Somali has been an indispensable source of independent, accurate, and timely information for millions of Somalis, many of whom rely on radio as their primary means of accessing news.
As you know, Somalia continues to face significant political, security, and humanitarian challenges. In this context, access to credible information is crucial to counter disinformation, support democratic governance, and promote peace and stability. VOA Somali has played a vital role in informing the Somali public, fostering dialogue, and amplifying voices that contribute to the country’s democratic processes and reconciliation efforts.
FESOJ strongly urges the U.S. government to reconsider any decision to halt or reduce the reach of VOA Somali. This service is not just a news platform; it is a lifeline for those in conflict-affected and underserved regions. Its closure would create an information vacuum, leaving Somalis more vulnerable to propaganda, misinformation, and extremist narratives.
We respectfully request that the U.S. Congress and the State Department ensure the continuation of VOA Somali Service broadcasts, preserving its essential role in providing balanced, fact-based journalism to the Somali people. The United States has long been a champion of press freedom and access to information, and we trust that your administration will uphold these values by safeguarding this critical service.
We appreciate your attention to this matter and are ready to engage in further discussions to support this cause. Please accept our highest regards.
Sincerely,
Farah O. Nur
Secretary General
