FESOJ has finalized training improving the professional skills of young journalists in Qardho city, Puntland State

Mogadishu city, Friday, October 11, 2024: Twenty young journalists have completed a two- day training workshop on enhancing professional skills in Qardho city, Karkaar region, Puntland State of Somalia from 9th to 10th October 2024.

The workshop training, implemented by the Federation of Somali Journalist (FESOJ) in  coordination with the Media Association of Puntland (MAP), was held at Hotel Alla-Amin in Qardho city.  Twenty journalists, including female journalists, mainly young newly hired selected from various media outlets in Qardho city were the major participants of the two – day training workshop.

The media journalists in Qardho city who has not received similar training in the last few years has been given the opportunity to be trained on the key topics, significant for the media focusing on: Journalism ethics, gender sensitive reporting, conflict sensitive reporting, how to make the various types of interviews, news and the value of the listeners, use of social media, – roles and critiques and combating disinformation.

In her opening remarks, Naima Muse, Secretary General of Media Association of Puntland (MAP) has pointed out FESOJ and MAP are giving priority to the young journalists working for the media in Qardho city and Puntland as well, and improving their professional skills is significant for the people and the country in general.

“The newly employed young journalists in Qardho city has got the opportunity to be trained with the basic skills of journalism conducted by FESOJ and facilitated by MAP.” Naima Muse, SG of MAP elaborated.

“The aim of the training workshop is to enhance the professional capacity of the young journalists in Qardho city to facilitate their media work and to upgrade their knowledge about the media law of Somalia and Puntland as well.” Farah Omar Nur, Secretary General of the Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) has indicated in his opening speech

In his official opening of the workshop, Abdi Said Qaal , the Mayor of Qardho District pointed out to be very pleased with the journalists of Qardho city to be provided with this type of training.

“The purpose of the training is to increase the knowledge of the journalists with the media law of Somalia and the media law of Puntland State, the ethics, reporting news, fact checking, which is part of the efforts to enhance the development of the country.” Abdi Said Qaal , Mayor of Qardho city added.

Fu’ad Abdirashid Mohamed, one the young journalists participating the training program has indicated the training has educated them with the ways to follow when making news, Vox pop, taking interviews and reports, and in general working on the bases of ethics of journalism.

Furthermore, Suad Hassan Shire, a female journalist participant highlighted to have benefited from the 2- day training sessions and received valuable lessons, and she appreciated FESOJ for this type of capacity building program.

Farah Omar Nur, Secretary General of FESOJ officially closing the training workshop thanked the trainees for their active participation and for showing enthusiasm and desire to improve their knowledge on professional journalism. He mentioned the need to establish Group Link for the participants for sharing media related information and programs in future and say connected.

He appreciated Naima Muse, Secretary General of MAP for the cooperation, warm reception and actively taking part in the facilitation of the workshop session.

The training workshop for the young journalists is part of a series of capacity building program activities funded by the EU, supported by Free Press Unlimited (FPU) and implemented by FESOJ in cooperation with VIKES.
