FESOJ Wraps Up Capacity-Building Training for Emerging Journalists in Kismayo
Mogadishu, November 10, 2025: The Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) has concluded a 2 – day training workshop with young newly employed journalists on professional skills in Kismayo city, Jubbaland State.
In opening remarks, Farah Omar Nur, Secretary General of FESOJ pointed out the significance of the training is to improve the capacity of the young journalists especially in the ethics of journalism which is required to be practically adopted.
Twenty journalists, including female journalists, mainly young newly employed that have been selected from different media outlets in Kismayo city were the main participants of the two – day training workshop that was held at Hotel Maamuus from 5th to 6th November 2025.
During the 2-day training proceedings, the participants were presented with the main topics dealing with Journalism ethics, gender sensitive reporting, conflict sensitive reporting, how to make the various types of interviews, news and the value of the listeners, use of social media, – roles and critiques and combating disinformation.
Furthermore, during the sessions, both the facilitators and the trainees has jointly conducted discussions on new stories previously prepared and presented by the reporter and checked whether the standards for news preparation were followed or not.
The young journalists participating the training program have indicated the training has provided them lessons on the ways to follow when making news and reports, and in general working on the bases of ethics of journalism.
Furthermore, Prof. Omar Abdi from the Somali National University, Journalism Department, also delivered remarks during the closing session. He emphasized the importance of journalists continuously strengthening their professional skills and pursuing higher education to ensure the delivery of quality information and services to the community.
On his part, Farah Omar, Secretary General of FESOJ, noted that the training will have a significant impact on the professional growth of journalists in Kismayo, particularly those who have joined the media sector in recent years.
In conclusion, “The Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) plays a vital role in building the capacity of journalists operating in Kismayo. I encourage all participating journalists to apply the knowledge you have gained in order to enhance the quality of your work.” The Minister of Information of the Jubbaland Administration, Abdifatah Mohamed Mukhtar, who officially closed the training pointed out.
In addition, FESOJ has concluded one – day training program with six trusted persons from three media houses held today on Friday, November 7, 2025 in Kismayo city, Jubbaland State.
The key purpose of the training program was to improve the trusted persons’ journalist’s awareness and understanding of labour rights and the importance of trade union, and to train the newly elected trusted person in their tasks to address the labour rights issues at the workplaces as well.
During the sessions, Ahmed Ali Mohamed, Head of FESOJ Training Department facilitating the session highlighted the significance of using written employment contracts between the journalists and the media managers and close cooperation between the working journalists and the management.
Furthermore, Halima Da’uud Mohamed, a member of the Trusted Persons Committee from Mogadishu, paid a visit to the Radio Kismayo and Puntland TV offices in Kismayo, Jubbaland State, to assess the overall labor conditions of the journalists working in these stations.
The training workshop for the young journalists and trusted persons is part of a series of capacity building program activities funded by the EU, supported by Free Press Unlimited (FPU) and implemented by FESOJ in cooperation with VIKES.
